Depending on the system and the connected display, the NVIDIA HD audio driver supports a limited number of audio formats.


Explanation

The audio formats that appear in the Windows Sound control panel depend on the formats supported by the audio codec, the audio driver, and also the capabilities of the display being used. All the NVIDIA HD audio codecs since the GT212 GPU support sampling rates of 32 kHz - 192 kHz, sample sizes of 16 bit - 24 bit, and speaker configurations from stereo to 7.1.

The NVIDIA HD audio driver is capable of supporting the following audio formats:

  • Sampling rates: 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, 96 kHz, 192 kHz
  • Sample sizes: 16 bit, 24 bit
  • Speaker configurations: Stereo, quadrophonic, 5.1, 7.1

The problem occurs when the system reports invalid data for the audio formats supported by the display. When this happens, the NVIDIA HD audio driver defaults to the following format:

  • Sampling rates: 48 kHz
  • Sample sizes: 16 bit
  • Speaker configurations: Stereo

Resolution

Beginning with the NVIDIA graphics driver version 352.86 (HD audio driver version 1.3.34.3), the driver defaults to the following supported formats whenever it receives invalid data for the formats supported by the display:

  • Sampling rates: 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, 96 kHz, 192 kHz
  • Sample sizes: 16 bit, 24 bit
  • Speaker configurations: Stereo

Note: The following formats are not commonly used, and consequently are not supported by the audio driver:

  • Sample rates: 32 kHz, 88.2 kHz, 176.4 kHz
  • Sample size: 20 bit
