I see a black screen after turning on my PC.  How do I fix this problem?

-If the problem occurs in Boot up/POST (Power On Self Test) prior to the Windows Operating System being loaded  please see the following for troubleshooting purposes:
  • Double-check the physical connection, ensuring that both ends of the video signal cable be it Display Port or HDMI are correctly securely connected.
Re-check the monitor to make sure the power is plugged in and its turned on.
  • If you are able to see Boot up / POST please ensure Compatibility Support Module (CSM) is disabled in the motherboard/PC BIOS for troubleshooting purposes. For details see https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5165/
  • If your using a new monitor that requires Display Port (DP 1.3 or 1.4) try using an HDMI port or a different monitor temporarily.  Ensure you have this update for GeForce 10 series and older https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/4674/
  • If you have modern high resolution DisplayPort monitor (G-sync / FreeSync) with GeForce RTX 30 series and experience black screens ensure you use the Nvidia's GPU Firmware Update Tool https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5233/
  • If you’re using multiple monitors please try only connecting a single monitor just for troubleshooting purposes.

-If your experiencing a black screen after the Windows logo and no desktop try the following for troubleshooting purposes:
  • Enter into Windows safe mode and possibly use the repair function in advance options. For more details see  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-your-pc-in-safe-mode-in-windows-92c27cff-db89-8644-1ce4-b3e5e56fe234
  • Perform a clean boot. In the search box on the taskbar, type msconfig and select System Configuration from the results. On the Services tab of System Configuration, select Hide all Microsoft services, and then select Disable all. On the Startup tab of System Configuration, select OK.  When you restart the computer to clean boot.  Thereafter, you can try enabling services one by one starting with NVIDIA listed services.
