Solution: The VBIOS must be queried from the hypervisor

From the hypervisor CLI, query the VBIOS using the following command:

nvidia-smi --query-gpu=gpu_name,gpu_bus_id,vbios_version --format=csv

E.g. ESXi 6:

$ nvidia-smi --query-gpu=gpu_name,gpu_bus_id,vbios_version --format=csv

name, pci.bus_id, vbios_version

GRID K2, 0000:87:00.0, 80.04.D4.00.07

GRID K2, 0000:88:00.0, 80.04.D4.00.08

E.g. XenServer:

$ nvidia-smi --query-gpu=gpu_name,gpu_bus_id,vbios_version --format=csv

name, pci.bus_id, vbios_version

GRID K2, 0000:86:00.0, 80.04.D4.00.09
