Known Issues or Configuration Reasons: OpenGL/DirectX/GPU Acceleration Not Used when using GRID or Quadro products in virtualized environments including VMware and Citrix


Citrix Environments

Citrix maintain a master KB article detailing many known configuration issues or bugs that mean the GPU may not being used along with solutions and workarounds. Citrix customers are advised to consult the live version that is regularly updated:

·        CTX202149 – Known Issues or Configuration Reasons: OpenGL/DirectX/GPU Acceleration Not Used

At the time of writing (live version should be checked) the master article includes:

1.     Known Issues

o   CTX202148  - Changes in Experimental Support for XenApp and Multiple GPUs

o   CTX202010 - Internet Explorer is Not GPU-accelerated When Virtualized on XenServer 6.2

o   CTX202065 - Mozilla Firefox Blocks GPU Acceleration for WebGL with XenApp on Windows 2012 R2/2008 R2

o   CTX202066 - GPU-accelerated OpenGL on Amazon Web Services (AWS G2 instances) with NVIDIA GRID K520/K340 No Longer Works

o   CTX202084 - Internet Explorer 9: Hardware Acceleration Does Not Work in Some Virtualization Environments (including vSphere/ESXi)

o   CTX202106 - Publishing Chrome Browser for XenApp – so that GPU acceleration is enabled

o   CTX202276 - Google Chrome Browser (Chrome 45 and upwards) Blocks GPU Acceleration with XenApp on Windows 2012 R2/2008 R2

o   CTX202839 - HDX - Certain Sets of Applications (Example: Office 2013) are Not Using the GPU

o   CTX204161 - Internet Explorer is Not GPU-Accelerated on XenApp for Windows Server (2012 R2 and 2008 R2)

2.      Known Dependency for Internet Explorer: CPU must support SLAT (Second Level Address Translation)

3.      Known Common Configuration Issue: Under RDP/RDS for XenApp on Windows Server Operating Systems (Win 2008 R2, Win 2012 R2 etc) are configured to disable GPU acceleration

4.      Known Common Configuration Issue: Under RDP/RDS for XenApp on Windows Server Operating Systems (Win 2008 R2, Win 2012 R2 etc) WPF applications such as Autodesk have to be explicitly enabled

5.      Known Monitoring Limitations: XenCenter Metrics show 0 for GPU-passthrough

NVIDIA KB Articles regarding known Citrix issues

Customers are advised to search this NVIDIA knowledge base which is constantly updated. Known issues include:

·        Answer 4092: Autodesk AutoCAD 2016 selecting the wrong display adaptor in virtualized environments including Citrix in conjunction with NVIDIA GPU use

 

VMware Environments

Customers are advised to consult the VMware Knowledge Base: https://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/microsite.do

 

Debugging advice

Customers are advised to try other applications to determine if an issue is application specific. E.g. if Internet Explorer not working check Chrome and also other applications using DirectX. Suitable test applications can be found on this Citrix list:
