Autodesk Maya - Enabling Active Stereo

Autodesk Maya 2009 and newer support Active stereo on Quadro Professional Graphics boards. If using active stereo with 3D Vision or 3D Vision Pro you need to be using one of the supported graphics boards or mobile workstations. The list of supported boards is here:

3D Vision and 3D Vision Pro will work in Windows XP, Vista, 7 and Linux. While active stereo will work on MacOS, 3D Vision and 3D Vision pro do not.

Window XP and Linux

Make sure 3D Vision or 3D Vision Pro are configured correctly and then select Active as the stereo display type in the Maya Viewport.

Windows 7 / Vista

Active stereo is not always enabled in Maya on Windows 7 and Vista. When this happens you'll see that the Active entry is the Stereo menu is grayed out:

To fix this:

Maya 2012: Disable Windows Aero, also known as the windows desktop manager. The easiest way to do this is choose a Vista Basic or Win 7 Basic color scheme from the desktop personalization options. There are many guides on how to do this posted on the internet, just search for "how to disable Aero"

Maya 2010 & 2011: Add the following line to your Maya.env file:

MAYA_ALLOW_STEREO_ON_VISTA=1 and then restart Maya.
