What are Optimus ‘IGP displays’ and ‘GPU displays’?

An IGP display is a display which is connected to outputs from the chipset’s integrated graphics (IGP). Most Optimus displays (and all internal notebook displays) are connected to the IGP. Applications visible on an IGP display may be rendered either on the IGP or on the discrete graphics adapter (GPU), as decided by the Optimus software. A GPU display is a display which is connected to outputs from the discrete graphics adapter. Some systems may support such displays (e.g. to provide an HDMI output on a Pine Trail platform). Applications visible on a GPU display are always rendered on the GPU.
