How is video playback supported on NVIDIA's Optimus platform?

The video capabilities of the integrated graphics IGP (Integrated Graphics Processor) vary by chipset. For example, Intel's Arrandale platforum can support full HD playback unassisted, whereas Pine Trail cannot. Where the GPU can provide substantially better quality or power, Optimus software will use the GPU to enhance the user experience.

Output on IGP displays

  • Standard definition (SD) video - Typically rendered on IGP.
  • High definition (HD) video - Typically rendered on IGP for most chipsets, on GPU for Pine Trail.
  • Protected content (e.g., Bluray) - Same as for HD video. If GPU rendered, content may be downscaled to SD resolutions for output on an IGP display.

Output on GPU displays

  • Always rendered on GPU
